Part 1

Part 2

When I said to the camera that Misha and I were avoiding the champagne fountain, she said “My mother will kill me” if she participated. A few seconds later, the organizer turned to us and said “It’s grape juice”. Ok, we both felt dumb.

On Visiting My Old Office At Race Course Lane

Published by Imran Ajmain under Memories, Places

After watching P.S. I Love You at Cathay (of which I find watching movies in Singapore ridiculously expensive), I insisted we walked to Mustafa Centre so that I could go on a toiletry spree. Being in Little India after so long made me feel kind of warm and fuzzy. Going through the hair products section, and spending hours at the electronics department was something I used to do alot since my old office was just across the street from the megastore. Even though I wasn’t entirely hungry, Hafiz and I walked to the old Race Course Lane, behind the Angullia mosque, and we had dinner at Shakuntala’s.

I used to share the office space with a sister organization, Music For Good. What started out as a meeting point, and fax facility, later turned into an internet cafe, recording studio and sometimes slumber party. I recorded my album there. The entire daytime I’d spend online, shuffling through my schedule book and admin file. I was the only fulltimer then, and when everybody else came with their Spinelli drinks and cookies, we’d laugh out loud to stupid jokes while pressing buttons or cutting pamphlets by hand. At night, we used to stay around so late just to watch movies and wait for my single to air on radio. We’d wait hours and hours for the taxis to come and we’d arrive home so late only to do it all over again the next day.

Basha shook my hand. I remember him offering to use his umbrella when it rained and I couldn’t get to the train station. I only recognize one or two of the waiters there at the restaurant, the rest were new faces. It could have easily been a good two years since I moved out of the office. Even the mango lassi brought back memories. And after watching a melodramatic movie, I couldn’t help reminisce the good times I had there. Most of the people in those memories are no longer in my system, for your information. Even the closest of the lot are gone.

For your information, my company now only runs limited promotions and production. I’m never around any longer anyway. I scrapped the entire lot of our artiste roster. I stopped doing Speakeasy and this year, there’s no way I’m doing Platform 8. But it all started there. The good things, the bad things, the ugly things. All in that office and the areas around it. I would diligently check for mail without opening the mailbox, for my first few cheques, letters of approval, basically good news. It was all there.

Maybe that’s what memory is for, yeah? To remind you that you made mistakes and not to repeat them, that you should be well prepared next time. I hope it does the same for the folks who feel that they’ve lost me because smelling the dried chilli in the air brought images of some folks back into the restaurant and it tells me that I’ve lost them. You win some, you lose some, dia kata.

The mee goreng mutton is still damn good.
