ps. Did you know Imran’s nominated for two categories in the early stages of Anugerah Bintang Popular organized by Berita Harian Malaysia? If you can get hold of a copy, do send in your votes via email. It is the first time that Imran is nominated for an awards outside of Singapore!

I was going through my entire collection of uploaded pictures to look for that one picture of me performing with Fuzz from Steel City Skies at the library@orchard a few years back. I couldn’t find it. I think I must have deleted it. I read in TimeOut that library@orchard was closing, and I, for once, don’t understand how can it be. I felt that it was a permanent fixture. Who would have thought a library had to move out? You know, you don’t think of these things.
As a singer/performer, I think my strength, in this minute Singapore, is to organize my own shows. Nobody becomes a star in Singapore by getting signed to a major album deal here. People either voted for you to become one, or you got to do your own shows. So I don’t get enough show invitations like some, so I invited everybody to come to my own shows instead. For as long as I can remember, the libraries were one of the few organisations who supported my cause through and through. They let me have the place for free, sometimes even lending me the photocopying machine to make copies of the flyer, and even if the sound system didn’t really work that well, I’d get a crowd and I’d get to do my thing. Moving on to the next library.
Alot of people would associate me with R&B/Hiphop, so there was this one time I felt like the indie-rock scene really needed to stop giving musicians who use minus-1 CDs a hard time. Yes, musicians. I started working with this band called Phorous, and particularly Fuzz, the guitarist. Library@Orchard took up my proposal and for a full hour, I sang Bjork, Radiohead covers and acoustic versions of my own songs. I suppose only when I reflect now that I’d realise my previous statement, my strength is to organize my own shows. I’d only realise it now. So those non-paying, lukewarm response gigs that I did at the libraries really paid off, I suppose. Amin!
Then earlier this year, I did Rauzan’s album launch there too, and to my horror, the sound system had gone so minimal that it couldn’t even host the minus-1 performers like us. I was really sorry, I felt like I embarrassed him. But the boy switched off the mic, and did his performance without it. It’s not like we were doing the Straits Times Rock Concert, where they had hired technicians and sound engineers perhaps. I asked for a favour, and I received it, so I couldn’t be expecting too much. The staff on duty really could not do anything, the mic kept on making alien sounds and got everybody in the crowd so irritated. She raised her voice to her partner and said “If only they told us earlier that it’s going to be a performance and not a talk, then we could have….”, and I remember vividly saying “No point talking about could-haves, right now, we need to find a quick solution. Don’t bother raising your voice because it won’t do anything. Sorry.” She apologized as well, and we let Rauzan deal with no mic. I told him I’d make it up to him, but things have changed now between us, I never managed to. Just like library@orchard moment for me, I suppose that would be his. Maybe one day, it’ll pay off for him too.
These little dots that we do, these dots unknowingly connect themselves to create a pathway for people like us, in the pathetic scene that we belong to. Some of us go astray, some of us go too far ahead of ourselves, some of us get lost, some of us don’t continue the journey properly, but it’s these kind of situations that help build a musician in Singapore, especially for Hiphop music. We already have so little here, and even the crap that we do ourselves, is already, well, crap. ZoukOut got to stop hiring the same local bands year after year, and start giving us our 15 minutes. But that’s a different story.
My advice to those who want to play original music and make a living out of it in Singapore, don’t wait for a deal to come knocking at your door, because it won’t. Anyways, kudos to libary@Orchard, eight years huh, that’s how long I’ve been singing!!! Thanks for being one of the dots. Thanks for the memories!
Anybody ever seen any of my gigs at the libraries?

So to run the radio station’s frequency at every Malaysian state, they need to fulfil certain requirements before their license for the subsequent state is approved, and guess what? In less than 6 months, they have covered from Johore Bahru all the way to Kota Kinabalu, and they’re throwing a big bash this Saturday to celebrate it.
They invited me (aside from 3 other Singaporeans) who will rock the show this Saturday at the Dataran Merdeka from 8pm onwards. I was at the Press Conference yesterday. (You may read The Star online about it) and I was seated infront of the press. Imagine them sitting right behind me!! They couldn’t see a thing. And I met one of the Singaporeans there, and he gave us a little commentary on what was going on.
