On Being Overly Sensitive

Published by Imran Ajmain under Uncategorized

I’ve been listening to the ‘Seribu Tahun’ flute and violin instrumentals prepared by Hafiz Hamidun and Abang Mohar for the ‘Kerana Cintaku Saerah’ drama since I came back last night, and I’ve had it on repeat like nobody’s business. I imagine that the series will be so sad since the backing track is so emotional. I teared a bit, because somebody so easily chose my song over a thousand other songs and made such a big deal out of it. I know I can be a little emotional when it comes to these things but I am entitled to. It’s beautiful.

Talking about feeling fuzzy on the inside, I’ve been on this online campaign subtly telling people not to be oversensitive. Oversensitive is when you being sensitive pisses people off, like you’re not treated the way you want to and yet the person doesn’t know it, or you receive much less than you expected, or you were shortchanged somehow. There’s a dozen ways I could think of that one would behave that way, but if you blog about it, and expect people to pick it up from there, and offer changes afterwards, sorry, you’re just pissing the shit out of me.

I played 3 roles yesterday; the one who saw somebody get overly sensitive with somebody else, the one who made somebody feel guilty for something, and the one who’s overly sensitive for experimental purposes. It turns out, we’re all the same and like L-Boogie says “knowing your condition is the reason you must change” then I shall. Do not piss people off because you have an insecurity. Nobody else is to blame for it, not even the people who caused your insecurity. You only have yourself to protect, to honour, to trust and to love, and if you think somebody’s words or actions can bring you down, damn, you’re an open field for people to practically stamp on every now and then.

Rise up to the spirit, people! If you know something’s wrong with yourself, CHANGE IT. Say no to oversensitivity. Say no to pissing good friends off.

On Beats Society Turning 3

Published by Imran Ajmain under Uncategorized

Where did these groups go?

Before there was Sleeq

When Aidil wasn’t around yet

When Freaky Z had more hair than songs

Ah familiar faces

My first event

After being eliminated from Singapore Idol, I felt this necessary urge to pump my passion for music and Hiphop in Singapore. I registered the company as a sole proprietor while I was working as a production manager in a now defunct Chinese language fashion magazine. I took a queue from the name Beat Society, a beat-making organization in New York, a name we’ve used for our events before. And on my own, using the printer at work, I printed the artistes tags and passes that Izaril had helped me with, I took the train from Aljunied and told every Malay boy I could come across wearing a cap or baggy jeans to come watch ‘Flag Day’, my first ever event I organized entirely on my own.

Ever since that day 7th August 2004, I didn’t look back. I’ve been organizing the most regular, consistent Hiphop events from Totally Booked that ran for a full year going from library to library, the original Speakeasy series at the Arts House, and Platform 5 onwards. I got to meet alot of people since then. Because of my affiliation to Hiphop music, I’ve been approached to promote or put together things for record labels and I’ve been rewarded handsomely like getting to meet Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, John Legend, the Black Eyed Peas, and if it wasn’t for reservist, I’d have met Rihanna as well a few weeks back. I had an all expenses trip to South Korea to accompany Freaky Z on the Gwangju Youth Music Festival performance last August. I’ve been made mentor two years in a row for the Noise Singapore Festival’s Apprenticeship Program. Speakeasy ends its run at Singapore Art Museum (in its 2nd year) this Saturday before we go for the Ramadhan break, Platform 7 is seeing so much support and recognition from the circuit, and we’re starting on 3 new series by year-end. For heaven’s sake, I think my song got on radio because of my work for Beats Society.

So although I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs doing this dream job of mine, I’ve lost a couple of friends, some people hate me with a passion, and the rumours and speculations just don’t stop, I think it’s the best thing that has happened to me. I do not think I’m the best and I do not believe that I’m always right, but you need to stop thinking you are then you will know help is available.

I’ve been blessed with the ever so loyal Sheikh and Nadrah who can keep me in a laughing fit even when the clouds are grey. There’s Playpause who has seen BS through thick and thin and yet stuck around anyways. There’s WorkHeart whose meticulous hard work for the heart pays off so quickly for us. Then there’s my artistes, old and new, here and gone. I won’t give you so much credit because you’ll end up bloated and punish me for everything anyway but I had a great time while we were at our best ya? Give it some time, it will work out. If it’s meant to be, it wasn’t in my hands in the first place. Salut! Thank you to all supporters, personal and corporate. :)

So for those of you, running online cupcakes stores, sell customised sneakers or paint mural for a living, make it your dream job and you won’t have a work another day in your life. Happy birthday Beats Society!

You guys are invited for the party this Saturday at the Singapore Art Museum at 6pm sharp.

On Performing for Charity this Weekend at Taman Warisan

Published by Imran Ajmain under Uncategorized

Azab Ilahi – Irsyadee

“Irsyad’s 60th Anniversary promises to bring much fun for every family and members of the public, while not forgetting the charity element and Dakwah. “Forum Masyarakat” will be the main highlight of the events, the forum stats at 8.00pm during the day we’re working out with some Nasyid Performance and motivational talk be it a family matter or reaching out to the youth. The proceeds from the event will be used to fund for the new building of Madrasah Irsyad at a cost of $16 million To date, we manage to collect $8 million . With the support from the corporate and organisation, we hope to raise $50,000 from this event, with heavy promotion both Media (Radio Warna and BH) include the 1 hour live roving report at site, appealing to public support for the event and also thru Tele Irsyad (donation via phone).

For your information, Madrasah Irsyad has never had its own building since its inception in 1947. With the growing numbers of students, a new permanent building is indeed a necessity. The new school, expected to be completed by 2008, would have a bigger enrolment space and better facilities such as the school library, science and computer laboratories. Islamic Religious Council of Singapore-MUIS is committed to support such a Cause as this is in line with its mission of providing quality and progressive education for community excellence.”

It will take place at Taman Warisan, Malay Heritage Center, Kampong Glam in the afternoon and I’m singing with Didicazli at 4.30pm and then headed off to Speakeasy for those who wanna come along! Check out Irsyadee above, boys from the Al-Irsyad school.

Imran appeared on Dina’s set during the Fireworks Festival weekend over at the Esplanade last weekend (as seen above). The crowd was beautiful and so were the fireworks. Sunday’s set was a little quieter due to the showers throughout the day. Nevertheless, thank you for coming to support our favourite Taurus. You may check out all videos from a kind fan from Kuala Lumpur, Kevin Yeoh, all posted at Imran’s Multiply.

PS: Imran’s doing a concert with Sri Mahligai 7th November. More info here!

On Doing Platform for the 7th Time This Year

Published by Imran Ajmain under Uncategorized

I started out doing Platform in 2001. We packed the place up and things went so well we did the 2nd one in the same year. I think things picked up after Platform 3, when the standards got better, the beats were banging and the support started to become very encouraging. Last year, we filled the place up to the brim and I started having so much support because ‘Sudah tu Sudah’ just came out.

Last year alone, we spotted Akeem and Krazie Starr out of the Top 5 bunch and they’ve been so busy, especially Krazie Starr. He did the MTV Hiphop Countdown last November, the MTV roadshows, he’s opening for Arrested Development in two weeks time, and his EP “Black Wit A  Lil Bit Of Green & Purple” is so good, you have to look out for his upcoming album “King Kong Drumz”. I really hope the electro/electronic scene will pick him up.

This year, the system has gotten so much better. We’ll have the final 15 perform at the Finals, in which you are invited for. Check out the list of performers. You may book tickets in bunches of 4 at $10 each thru info@beats.sg, it will be $12 at the door. It’s no age limit, tudung-friendly, family friendly, no smoking, yada yada. Come support my search for the next Hiphop act.

Kerana Cintaku Saerah on TV3

The image “http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1111/1167494512_e94dd4a839_o.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Imran’s ‘Seribu Tahun’ is the opening theme for TV3’s biggest drama starting this 5th September. It’s the first time a television series is touted as an ‘event’ due to its stellar cast and prime-time slot, running through the entire Ramadhan. It stars Umie Aida as Saerah.

Please submit your old wedding pictures, we’re still helping collect photographs for the ‘Seribu Tahun’ video project. Send them to imran@beats.sg! In the meanwhile, we’re excited about 5th September! More info here.
